About Portrush (Ramore Head foreshore)

The foreshore at Ramore Head exposes the famous Portrush Rock: Lower Jurassic Waterloo Mudstone, around 190 million years old, baked to dark hornfels where the dolerite Portrush Sill intruded it about 60 million years ago. Abundant ammonites remain visible in the metamorphosed rock, and in the 18th century they fuelled the Neptunist versus Vulcanist debate over whether basalt formed in seawater or from molten rock. The site is protected as the Ramore Head and The Skerries ASSI and a National Nature Reserve, so the ammonites here are viewed in place, not hammered out.
