About Warrego Fossicking Area
The Warrego fossicking area lies on Phillip Creek pastoral lease north-west of Tennant Creek, reached by 45.5 km of sealed road then 13.8 km of formed dirt track to an old mine at the centre of the area. The Warrego copper-bismuth-gold mine operated here from the late 1950s until late 1989, producing about 4.94 million tonnes of ore and treating ore trucked in from the White Devil, Gecko, Eldorado and Orlando mines. Gold occurs in the surface soil and can be found by dry panning, and metal detectors have been used successfully. As a declared fossicking area it is open to fossickers, and bush camping is allowed, though the old bores no longer supply water.
