About Maryborough
Maryborough is one of the great alluvial goldfields of Victoria's Golden Triangle, rushed in 1854. Rich shallow leads and surfacing grounds at Chinaman's Flat, Alma, Craigie, Timor and Betley yielded coarse nuggets from drift terraces, while deep leads beneath the basalt later produced large quantities of fine gold from ancient buried river channels. Detectorists still recover nuggets from the ironstone gravels and sandy flats where early miners left ground undisturbed. Prospecting requires a Victorian Miner's Right and is allowed on Crown land and State forest around the town, including Craigie State Forest.
