About Maldon
Maldon, in Victoria's Golden Triangle, is regarded as Australia's best-preserved historic gold mining town. Gold was discovered in 1853, and reefs such as Nuggetty, Derby, Beehive and Tarrengower were famously rich, with some ore returning 2 to 3 ounces per ton; Nuggetty Reef became renowned worldwide for large crystalline gold specimens. Alluvial gold also came from the gullies, flats and shallow leads around town, including nuggets over 20 ounces. Much of the goldfield lies on Crown land and State forest that can be worked with a Victorian Miner's Right, though heritage-protected mining relics must not be disturbed.
