About Mooka Station
Mookaite, a richly coloured silica rock in reds, yellows, tans and purples, comes from a single place: Mooka Creek on Mooka Station, a private pastoral station on the western side of the Kennedy Range, roughly 160 km inland from Carnarvon. It forms in the Windalia Radiolarite, where the opaline silica skeletons of microscopic radiolaria were cemented into chert and chalcedony, and it is dug as nodules of varying size from decomposed radiolarian clay. Claim holders quarry the deposit commercially with heavy machinery. The station is private property, and collecting requires permission from the station owners; there is no open public access.
