About Mount Magnet
Mount Magnet, on the Great Northern Highway in the Murchison, is the longest surviving gold mining settlement in Western Australia, worked since gold was found in 1891. The town actively promotes gold detecting and fossicking, and a 37 km tourist trail links old mine sites, granite outcrops and lookouts, with The Granites, a granite breakaway and Aboriginal rock art site, 7 km north of town. Both prospecting and fossicking require a Western Australian Miner's Right. Much of the surrounding ground is pastoral leasehold, where prospectors are expected to notify the pastoralist of where they plan to operate and for how long.
