About Inverell
Inverell is known as the Sapphire City, the centre of a district whose volcanic soils hold some of the richest sapphire ground in New South Wales. Free designated fossicking areas ring the town: Frazers Creek at Nullamanna, 20 km north, yields alluvial sapphire near the creek beds; Staggy Creek near Copeton Dam, 28 km out, produces diamonds, black tourmaline and quartz; and Stannifer Creek at Tingha turns up clear, smoky and rutilated quartz and citrine. Sapphire and zircon remain the district's signature finds. No licence is needed to fossick in New South Wales.
