About Wellingrove Fossicking Area
Wellingrove is a public fossicking area about 14 km north-west of Glen Innes in the New England gemfields, the most prolific sapphire region in New South Wales. The ground is an alluvial deposit that has been worked as shallow pits and scrapings, and the Geological Survey of New South Wales records both sapphire and zircon here, the zircon commonly turning up as small worn pieces in the gravels. Stones are recovered by digging and sieving the alluvium. No licence is needed to fossick in New South Wales, although tunnelling is prohibited and powered equipment is not allowed.
