About Tomahawk Creek
Tomahawk Creek is the largest and most remote fossicking area on the Central Queensland gemfields, about 2,340 hectares of undulating bushland reached from Rubyvale via 27 km of the unsealed Clermont road and 17 km of station track. Named workings include Featherbed Run, Oak Ridge, Zircon Gully, Ironstone Gully and the Mount Hoy diggings. Shallow wash at Oak Flats runs only 300 mm to 1 m deep, while Zircon Gully carries a thin, almost cemented wash beneath up to 2 m of sandy overburden. The area still holds large stretches of unworked ground and produces good blues as well as fancy stones. Facilities are limited to a solar telephone at the entrance, and a Queensland fossicking licence is required.
