About Scrub Lead Fossicking Area

Scrub Lead is one of the designated fossicking lands of the Central Queensland gemfields, lying between the townships of Rubyvale and Sapphire off the sealed road from Anakie. Miners sank shafts along the lead in the early 1900s, and it has a reputation for yielding some of the best stones of the fields, especially blues. The sapphire-bearing wash is deep here, generally 3 to 12 m or more below the surface, deeper than the shallow ground near Sapphire township. A Queensland fossicking licence is required, and camping on designated fossicking land is limited to three months.
