Where to Find Agate in Oregon

Oregon is the most varied agate state in the country. The Priday Ranch and Richardson's beds near Madras yield blue, plume, and moss-filled thundereggs from welded tuff. South of there, Glass Buttes in Lake County hosts flame-colored chalcedony with sagenite inclusions, and the Owyhee plateau on the Oregon-Idaho border produces the famous Owyhee blue agate and Morrisonite-style picture jasper. The central and southern Oregon coast (Agate Beach, Yachats, and the Coquille River mouth) yields tide-tumbled carnelian, banded agate, and small chalcedony nodules in winter storm gravels. Each district produces a recognizable color and habit.
