About Brook Bay

Brook Bay exposes the Wessex Formation of the Wealden Group, Early Cretaceous river-channel and floodplain deposits around 125 million years old. Careful searching of the shingle and lower foreshore at low tide turns up rolled dinosaur bone fragments and teeth, fossil wood, fish remains including Lepidotes, and crocodile and turtle material, with dinosaur footprints preserved in situ and as natural casts on the foreshore. At nearby Hanover Point the famous pine raft, a bed of calcite-mineralised conifer logs, appears at low tide. The bay is an SSSI: loose material may be collected but hammering bedrock is prohibited, and the tide can cut the beach off quickly.
