Amite River Valley: Agate Rockhounding in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana

The Amite River near Baton Rouge is Louisiana's most productive agate locality, its gravel bars carrying banded agate, carnelian, jasper, and even the rare local opal. The stones eroded from far-northern limestones and rode ancient rivers south into the Citronelle Formation gravels the Amite now reworks. Fresh material appears on the bars after each flood, which keeps the surface hunting renewing itself. Reported finds include agate.
