Deerfield River: Jasper & Agate Rockhounding in Franklin County, Massachusetts

The lower Deerfield River is the best known site in Massachusetts for agate, jasper, and chalcedony, eroded from the Deerfield basalt and other Triassic-Jurassic volcanic rocks of the Connecticut Valley rift and concentrated in the river's gravel bars. Waterworn nodules and banded fragments turn up after high water reworks the cobbles. It is a surface hunt, with no digging needed, and the material is scattered through the gravel at accessible bends. Reported finds include jasper, agate, chalcedony.
