At Great Bend the Arkansas River swings east and begins its 192-mile National Water Trail run to the Oklahoma line, a designation that gives the public access to sandbars and gravel islands along the route. The river's gravels carry agate, jasper, chalcedony, and petrified wood washed down from the Rocky Mountains and the High Plains. The Arkansas is one of only three navigable rivers in Kansas, so its bed is public land.

Morton County
Cimarron National Grassland covers about 108,000 acres in the far southwest corner of Kansas and is the largest tract of public land in the state, managed by the U.S. Forest Service. Its Ogallala caprock and Cimarron River gravels shed agate, jasper, chalcedony, chert, and petrified wood, and this is one of the few places in Kansas where casual rockhounding is expressly allowed on public ground.
