About Lethbridge
Lethbridge sits in the Oldman River valley, where coulees cut into soft Cretaceous marine shale of the Bearpaw Formation. Calcite is the signature local find, pictured from Lethbridge in the Calgary Rock and Lapidary Club guide, and selenite is likewise on the club's list of Alberta minerals. The same Bearpaw shales, in a narrow corridor along the St. Mary and Oldman rivers, yield the iridescent fossil ammonites cut as ammolite, designated Lethbridge's official gemstone in 2007 and Alberta's in 2022.
