About Jones Creek Gold Fossicking Area

Jones Creek flows beside Mount Greenland Road at the edge of Ross, a gold town 30 km south of Hokitika on State Highway 6, and part of the creek is set aside for permit-free fossicking with hand-held, non-motorised tools. Alluvial gold is present, though concentrations are low, and signs at the creek mark the boundaries and rules. The Ross Goldfield Water Race Walkway starts near the Ross Goldfields Information and Heritage Centre at the end of Aylmer Street and follows an old water race through regenerating forest past tunnels, dam sites and a replica miner's hut.
