About Dease Lake

Dease Lake sits at the heart of northern British Columbia's jade country, one of the areas (with Cassiar and Mount Ogden) where nephrite is mined in the province, the world's largest nephrite producer. The deposits form lens- and cigar-shaped bodies at faulted contacts between serpentinite and chert of oceanic terranes such as Cache Creek. The Polar mine near Dease Lake produced the famous gem-grade Polar Jade. These northern deposits are remote, and harsh winters restrict mining to a short season from mid June to late September. The occurrences are held under active mineral claims, and casual collecting from claims is not allowed.
