About Mennock Water

Mennock Water runs down the Mennock Pass below Wanlockhead, Scotland's highest village and the heart of a gold panning tradition documented since the reign of James IV in the early 1500s. Gold from the surrounding Crawford Muir went into royal coinage under James V and Mary Queen of Scots, and local gold features in a ring on the Scottish Parliament's mace. The burns still carry abundant small flakes and the occasional nugget. A licence must be purchased from the Museum of Lead Mining shop in Wanlockhead before panning in the local burns, and the museum also runs taster sessions and bookable five-hour panning courses.
