The Piedmont hills around Brandywine Springs and the Red Clay valley west of Wilmington are the type area for sillimanite, Delaware's state mineral, which occurs here as large masses and boulders in the high-grade Wilmington Complex gneiss alongside garnet, mica, and microcline feldspar. It is the geological heart of the state's small crystalline-rock corner, the only place Delaware's own state mineral is truly at home. For collectors it is more a place to understand Delaware's oldest, hardest rocks than a dig site. Reported finds include sillimanite.
