Keweenaw Point: Keweenaw Agate & Thomsonite Rockhounding in Keweenaw County, Michigan
Updated June 2026
The exposed Lake Shore Traps along the wave-washed tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula carry agate-filled amygdules and datolite, with larger Keweenaw agates working loose from a narrow gravel band at the waterline. The State of Michigan and The Nature Conservancy secured public access to roughly 6,275 acres here in 2003, keeping the Point open for shoreline collecting. Thomsonite and chalcedony round out the finds. Reported finds include keweenaw agate, thomsonite, datolite, chalcedony, jasper. Public-land rules vary by agency, season, and field office. The RockHoundR app pulls live BLM, USFS, NPS, and tribal overlays so you can see exactly which agency manages the ground at this spot.
