The Salt Plains are the only place on Earth where selenite crystals grow with a natural hourglass of reddish-brown sand sealed inside them, and selenite is Oklahoma's state crystal. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service keeps a designated area open on the salt flat where visitors dig their own crystals from the wet gypsum a few inches down.
