About Steel Mountain

Steel Mountain is an anorthosite complex in the western Newfoundland Appalachians, dated by whole-rock isotopes at about 1.2 billion years and interpreted as a sliver of ancient basement caught up in the mountain belt. Along with feldspathic anorthosite and gabbronorite, the complex contains bodies of magnetite-ilmenite ore. Mineralogical study documents euhedral almandine-rich garnet and Mg-rich hercynite spinel partly altered to corundum, matching the garnet, spinel and corundum reported from this locality.
