Pepper Creek: Fossil Hunting in Sussex County, Delaware

Updated July 2026

Pepper Creek, a tidal creek south of Dagsboro draining toward Indian River Bay, is a Delaware Geological Survey fossil locality where Pleistocene marine shells, less than two million years old, weather out of the low banks and mix with the creek gravels. It gives southern Sussex County its own fossil spot, distinct from the older Cretaceous marl at the canal and the Miocene ponds up in Kent. The setting is quiet salt marsh and creek shore. Reported finds include fossils. Below: coordinates, access notes, nearby spots, and trip-planning links.
