Igneous rocks form from cooled magma or lava. Texture (grain size) tells you whether the rock cooled slowly underground or quickly at the surface.

Field tip: Coarse, visible crystals = intrusive (slow-cooled). Fine, glassy, or vesicular = extrusive (fast-cooled).
